Power, Presence, and Impact: Leading with Vulnerability

In leadership, and in life, there’s an enduring tension between how we appear and how we connect. What impression do you leave when you step into a room? What kind of leader do you want to be-not just when the spotlight is on, but when the tools are put away and only authenticity remains?

Our greatest impact is rarely made through when we are untouchable. It is made when we lead with openness, when we recognize the subtle currents of power and presence, and when we hold ourselves accountable for the influence we have on other, both intended and unintended.

Today, let’s explore how power, presence, accountability, and vulnerability intertwine to create truly transformative leadership.

Defining the Fundamentals

Before we dive deeper, let’s frame a few essential concepts:

  • Power: The capacity to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.

  • Presence: The state of simply being in a space—seen or unseen, active or passive—your presence always has impact.
  • Accountability: The responsibility to own the effects of your actions, both intended and unintended.

  • Vulnerability: The willingness to be exposed to the possibility of being harmed—whether mentally/emotionally, socially, or physically.

Each of these plays a critical role in how we engage with the world, whether in leadership, advocacy, or community building.

The Fundamental Error

A common trap in leadership is believing that control or outward strength alone defines our effectiveness. But leadership isn’t about posturing. It’s about connection. And connection requires risk.

True power comes from varied sources:

  • The power of ritual—how shared experience binds us.
  • The power of identity—how embracing our authentic self draws others toward us.
  • The power of consent to be influenced—recognizing that leadership is not a monologue; it is a mutual dance.

Without vulnerability, power becomes brittle. Without presence, accountability evaporates. Without accountability, impact becomes unpredictable: laced with unhealthy behaviors.

Navigating Power Dynamics

Regardless of identities we inhabit, power dynamics are not fixed. They evolve. They must evolve.

We need to continually ask:

  • What’s at risk if I stay silent?
  • What’s at risk if I speak up?

When we choose silence, we risk losing employees, friends, and members of our communities. When we choose to speak up, we risk being wrong—or even becoming a target. But we also create the possibility for change.

The “Why” Trap—and How to Avoid It

One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is falling into the “Why” trap:

“Why did you do that?”
“Why do you feel that way?”
“Why did you choose that?”

On the surface, these questions seem innocuous. But they often carry hidden judgment, causing people to:

  • Hide
  • Repress
  • Deny
  • Defend
  • Withdraw

Instead of seeking blame, we can shine a light on the unseen parts of ourselves and others by asking better questions:

  • What was your experience?
  • How did you come to that conclusion?
  • What evidence do you see?
  • Who else was involved?
  • What steps did you take?

Better questions create better understanding.
Understanding creates trust.
Trust fuels true leadership.

Tools for Connection: Imago Dialogue

One powerful technique for deepening understanding is the Imago Dialogue. In this process, we listen to reflect, validate, and empathize—not to fix or defend. It helps us experience another’s reality without needing to change it. It helps us lead with vulnerability and courage, not control.
